About

I am a writer living in New York. I’m a news assistant at The New York Times Magazine.

From 2009-2011, I served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Kolda, a far-flung city in southern Senegal. I worked in community gardens to promote food security and also led projects in local agribusiness and girl’s education.

I love beer o’clock, good food, trashy food, and the high-end catalogue Sky Mall.

Please visit the fashion blog Sartorial Senegal I created with my friend Marcie Todd. My writing also appears in The Huffington Post.

    Oh Maya,
I would love to talk with you before you leave. I have been away from the civilized?world and am just back today from this country’s third world-the reservation. I know you will take with you all the warmth and genuine heart that you have carried everywhere else.
I can see you dancing now.

    Love.

Girl I want to see a HOT photo of you in this section…I’m thinking reclined on the beaches of Dakar wearing beautiful and colorful Senegalese garb…or maybe in the desert…I need to get over there and have a shoot with you thats what! :-)

Hi Maya. Just wanted to say great article printed on the Hunffington Post. I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Madagascar for 4 years and really cherished your article. I am now a Georgetown student in the MS of Foreign Service program in Washington D.C so if you are ever in the neighborhood, I would love to pick your brain for more insight on your experience in Senegal. I have applied to work in the U.S. embassy for a summer internship out there and I am sure you have insightful things to say about that too.

    Best,
    Honore
