    Hi, Maya,

I can’t imagine what an adventure you must be having. I just finished reading a fun book called “The Sex Lives of Cannibals” by A. Martin Troost in which a man describes living with his girlfriend on a South Pacific atoll (she has just gotten a job for the US govt, but not the Peace Corps). He describes how the natives use the lagoons as toilets. (His first day there he went swimming in the lagoon and was horrified to see more than one person walking down to the shore and defecating. At least you don’t have that to worry about!
The other annoying drawback to their culture is that their favorite song was the “macarena” and he would hear it constantly. I’m sure your cultural offerings are much more interesting.
    Keep the reports coming.

  4. Maya,
    Hi!
I really enjoy the blog for it’s honesty and humour.
I’m connecting because I’m looking for your “people”.
I work with a high school program based on a tall ship. It is coming to Dakar in late November for the 4th year in a row. Last year we worked with Jared in Dakar but he’s home now and so I’m desperately trying to figure out which volunteers are working on his Fann Hospital project, or urban agriculture in Dakar, or simply working in dakar for that matter.
CAn you be of any help.
    THANK YOU!!!

    Hi Maya!

We met in the way from Arusha to Dar Es Salaam. Back to Europe and still under the cultural shock I went to your blog. It is very interesting! Thumbs up!! Hope you remember me :-)

  7. Beautifully written blog.

Hi Maya, I found your blog recently while browsing the internet for advice on Peace Corp Volunteering. I got so excited to see a blog about service in Senegal since I will be leaving in three months to be a health service volunteer there! I am dying for advice, as much as I can get, about how to prepare for service. Your latest post about failure was one of the most honest feedback of the program that I have read so far. Admittedly, I don’t know quit how to process this before I leave for my own service. Any advice, honest feedback, ways to prepare, etc that you can tell me would be more than appreciated.
